If you’ve never stood next to a Mastiff before, the first thing you’ll notice is their size.
The second thing you’ll notice? Their sweetness.

At The Woof Gang, we love our Mastiffs for so many reasons. Yes, they are massive. Yes, they are powerful. But underneath all that size is one of the most loyal, gentle, and devoted breeds you will ever meet.
Let’s talk about why the Mastiff might just be your family’s gentle giant.
A Little About the Breed
Mastiffs are an ancient breed with roots tracing back thousands of years. Historically used as guardians and protectors, they were bred for strength, loyalty, and courage.
Today’s Mastiff still carries that protective instinct, but in a calm, steady, family-centered way.
They are:
• Loyal
• Calm
• Protective
• Deeply devoted
• Surprisingly sensitive
Despite their intimidating size, Mastiffs are not aggressive by nature. They are confident and steady, not reactive or high strung.
Personality: Big Body, Soft Soul
Mastiffs are known for being incredibly people oriented. They form strong bonds with their families and often choose a favorite person to shadow around the house.
They are not overly energetic. In fact, most Mastiffs are quite laid back indoors. They enjoy being near you more than being constantly on the move.
You may hear the term “gentle giant” used often with this breed, and it truly fits. They are patient, affectionate, and generally calm.
And yes, they are aware of their size… but sometimes they forget they are not lap dogs.
Are Mastiffs Good for Families?
In our experience at The Woof Gang, Mastiffs can make wonderful family companions when raised and trained properly.
They tend to:
• Be very patient with children
• Be naturally protective without being aggressive
• Form deep family bonds
• Thrive in stable, structured homes
Because of their size, supervision with very small children is important. Not because they are mean, but because they are large and can accidentally bump or knock over little ones.
They do best in homes that understand the responsibility that comes with a giant breed.
Space and Living Requirements

Mastiffs do not need endless running space, but they do need room to stretch out comfortably.
They are typically not hyper dogs. A moderate yard and regular walks are usually enough to keep them happy. What they truly want is to be near their people.
They are not ideal for very small apartments simply due to their size, but they do not require extreme exercise like some working breeds.
Training and Temperament
Mastiffs are intelligent but not overly eager to please in a high energy way. They respond best to calm, consistent leadership.
Early socialization is very important. Exposure to people, places, and situations helps them grow into confident, stable adults.
They are sensitive dogs. Harsh training methods do not work well with this breed. Firm but gentle guidance is key.
Grooming and Maintenance
The Mastiff’s coat is relatively low maintenance.
You can expect:
• Light to moderate shedding
• Regular brushing
• Routine nail and ear care
One thing to note… drool. Some Mastiffs drool more than others. A towel nearby becomes part of life with a Mastiff, and most owners will tell you it’s a small tradeoff for such a loving companion.
Is a Mastiff the Right Fit for You?
A Mastiff may be a great fit if you’re looking for:
• A loyal family guardian
• A calm, steady companion
• A dog that bonds deeply with its people
• A breed with presence and personality
They may not be ideal if you prefer a small dog, need a highly active jogging partner, or are not prepared for the responsibility that comes with a giant breed.
Mastiffs are not just big dogs. They are a lifestyle commitment. But for the right family, they are truly incredible.
Our Thoughts at The Woof Gang
We adore raising Mastiffs because of their loyalty and gentle nature. There is something incredibly special about watching a giant dog rest their head gently in your lap.
They are protectors. They are companions. They are family.
If you’re considering adding a Mastiff to your home and want to talk through whether this breed fits your lifestyle, we are always happy to help.
