Feeding an English Mastiff: From Growing Puppy to Gentle Giant

There’s nothing quite like watching an English Mastiff puppy grow. One minute, you have a wrinkly little puppy with oversized paws, and before you know it, you’re sharing the couch with a dog who seems to take up most of it!

At The Woof Gang Puppies, we know good nutrition is an important part of helping an English Mastiff grow and thrive. Because Mastiffs are a giant breed, their nutritional needs are a little different from those of smaller dogs. The goal during puppyhood isn’t to make them grow as quickly as possible. It’s to support steady, controlled growth while providing the nutrients their developing body needs.

Here’s a simple guide to feeding your English Mastiff from puppyhood through adulthood.

Why Nutrition Matters So Much for an English Mastiff Puppy

English Mastiffs have a lot of growing to do!

Unlike small breeds that reach their adult size relatively quickly, Mastiffs continue developing for a long time. Their bones, joints, muscles, and overall body structure have to support a tremendous amount of weight as they mature.

That makes the quality and balance of their puppy food especially important.

For most Mastiff puppies, a food specifically formulated for large or giant-breed growth is the best place to start. Look for a diet that is complete and balanced for growth, including the growth of large-size dogs.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that a Mastiff puppy needs an extremely high-calorie diet simply because they're going to become a very large dog. More isn't necessarily better. Excess calories can encourage overly rapid growth and unnecessary weight gain, which can put additional stress on a developing puppy's bones and joints.

Think healthy, steady growth rather than fast growth.

Calcium & Phosphorus: More Isn't Better

Calcium is important for growing bones, but this is one area where Mastiff owners should resist the urge to add a little extra "just to be safe."

Large and giant-breed puppies need carefully balanced amounts of calcium and phosphorus while their skeletons are developing. Too much calcium can be problematic, just as inadequate nutrition can be.

A properly formulated large-breed puppy food should already contain appropriate amounts of these minerals.

Unless your veterinarian specifically recommends it, don't add calcium, bone meal, or mineral supplements to an already complete and balanced puppy diet. Adding supplements can upset the nutritional balance the food was designed to provide.

Protein Is Important, Too

Those big Mastiff bodies need protein to support developing muscles and other tissues.

Rather than simply choosing whichever bag has the highest protein percentage, concentrate on feeding a nutritionally complete, well-balanced food made for large-breed puppies.

Your puppy's diet should provide appropriate protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids together. Nutrition works as a whole package rather than as a competition to see which food has the biggest number on the label!

Keeping Your Mastiff Puppy Lean

We know those big Mastiff puppy eyes can be incredibly persuasive.

"Surely I need another snack?" Probably not. 😉

Keeping a growing Mastiff at a healthy, lean body condition is one of the most important nutritional goals during development.

You should be able to feel your dog's ribs without having to press through a heavy layer of fat, and your veterinarian can help you learn how to evaluate your Mastiff's body condition as they grow.

Don't rely entirely on the feeding chart printed on the bag. Those recommendations are a useful starting point, but individual puppies can need different amounts depending on their age, activity level, body condition, metabolism, and the calorie density of their particular food.

How Often Should an English Mastiff Puppy Eat?

Young puppies generally do better when their daily food is divided into multiple measured meals rather than receiving one enormous meal.

As your puppy grows, the number of meals can gradually decrease. Your veterinarian and breeder can help you decide when it's appropriate to make those changes.

Measured meals also make it much easier to know exactly how much your Mastiff is eating.

And with a breed capable of giving you the world's saddest face beside an empty food bowl, measuring is probably more reliable than asking your Mastiff whether they've eaten enough. They'll almost certainly vote for seconds.

What About Treats?

Treats can absolutely be part of life with your Mastiff. They can be especially useful during training.

They just shouldn't accidentally become another meal.

Treat calories count toward your dog's total daily intake, so keep portions small and avoid allowing treats and extras to replace the balanced nutrition provided by your puppy's regular food.

You can even reserve some of your puppy's normal kibble and use it for training throughout the day.

Your puppy doesn't need to know that their exciting training reward technically came from breakfast!

Growing Into Adulthood

One important thing to remember about an English Mastiff is that looking big doesn't necessarily mean they're finished growing.

Giant breeds mature more slowly than many smaller dogs. That's why you shouldn't automatically switch to adult food simply because your puppy has become enormous.

Talk with your veterinarian about when your individual Mastiff is ready to transition from a large-breed growth formula to an appropriate adult diet. When it's time to change foods, making the transition gradually can help reduce digestive upset.

Feeding Your Adult English Mastiff

Once your Mastiff reaches adulthood, the nutritional focus changes from supporting growth to maintaining a healthy body condition, muscle mass, and overall wellness.

A complete and balanced adult dog food appropriate for your Mastiff's size, activity level, and individual needs is important.

And portion control still matters.

A few extra pounds might not seem significant on such a massive dog, but maintaining an appropriate weight is particularly important for a giant breed whose joints already carry a substantial load.

Your veterinarian can help you determine your Mastiff's ideal body condition and adjust portions when necessary.

Don't Forget About Water

It sounds simple, but fresh water is an essential part of good nutrition.

Your English Mastiff should have access to clean, fresh water throughout the day. And yes, when a Mastiff drinks, there's a decent chance you'll end up with water on the floor, their face, and possibly somewhere you didn't think water could reach.

It's part of the charm. ❤️

A Special Note About Bloat

English Mastiffs are a large, deep-chested breed, which means owners should also learn about gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), commonly called bloat.

GDV is a life-threatening emergency in which the stomach becomes enlarged and can twist. Owners of Mastiffs should know the warning signs, which can include a suddenly enlarged or tight abdomen, restlessness, excessive drooling, repeated attempts to vomit without producing anything, weakness, or collapse.

If you ever suspect bloat, seek emergency veterinary care immediately. This isn't something to monitor at home.

Because individual risk can vary, talk with your veterinarian about feeding practices, exercise around meals, and whether preventive gastropexy is something you should consider for your Mastiff.

What Should You Look for on the Dog Food Label?

Dog food labels can feel like they require their own instruction manual, but there's one particularly useful thing to look for.

Choose a food labeled as complete and balanced for your dog's appropriate life stage.

For a growing Mastiff, look for wording indicating that the food is appropriate for growth, including the growth of large-size dogs.

Your veterinarian can also help you evaluate a diet based on your dog's age, weight, body condition, health, and lifestyle rather than relying on marketing claims on the front of the bag.

Every Mastiff Is an Individual

There isn't one exact amount of food that's right for every English Mastiff.

A puppy going through a growth phase may have different needs than an adult Mastiff who prefers supervising the household from the couch. Age, activity, body condition, metabolism, health, and the food itself all affect how much an individual dog needs.

Regular veterinary visits are especially helpful while your Mastiff is growing. Your veterinarian can monitor weight and body condition and help you adjust feeding as your puppy develops.

Growing a Gentle Giant Takes Time ❤️

Watching an English Mastiff grow from a wrinkly little puppy into an enormous, devoted companion is pretty special.

Good nutrition doesn't need to be complicated. Start with a complete and balanced large-breed puppy diet, encourage steady rather than excessive growth, keep your puppy at a healthy body condition, be cautious with unnecessary supplements, and work with your veterinarian as their needs change.

Most importantly, enjoy the puppy stage while you can.

Those oversized paws won't stay attached to a little puppy for very long!
